David had always wanted to work with children, and so when he left school at 16 he contacted VTS.
Upon starting his course he was found a work placement in a pre-school close to where he lived. Here he would gain the essential experience and on the job knowledge he needed to attain his qualification.
Whilst working at his placement, David's daily duties were rotated to ensure that he gained as much experience, in as many different areas of the job as possible. David's assessor visited him at the pre-school on a monthly basis to observe him carrying out his duties, and provide the necessary guidance to enable him to complete his course work. In addition to this he attended the VTS college once a week, where he received further training in a class room environment.
Whilst at his placement, David worked alongside other members of staff and helped in the day to day running of the centre. Because of his natural ability with children and his enthusiasm for the job, it wasn't long before he became a valued member of the team and upon completion of his NVQ was offered a full time position at a nearby after schools club.
Now, having got the job he had always wanted, David has returned to VTS to study for his level 3 NVQ, that he hopes will enable him to move in to a more senior role.
‘Working on my NVQ gave me focus and secured my present job. I really enjoy working with children and feel that I am making a positive impact on their lives. Achieving my level 2 NVQ has given me a great start to my career and I'm now ready to tackle my level 3 qualification'.
